news about nothing much, end of July 2010

31st Jul 2010, 11:55 pm

Hi
Been a while since the last update so here’s a bit of news…. Life tends to get in the way sometimes so you don’t get to spend the time you would like to on the fun things…. Not so much time for music of late, but I’ve got some things done….

I have completed the 6th track of the collaboration with Larkian. We now have to do some mixing and editing and decide on a running order, but this should appear on CD later this year.

Also coming nicely is the result of my meeting with Eric Quach (thisquietarmy)… we met in Montreal last year when I played at Under The Snow and had arranged in advance to get together and play a bit. We improvised for about 2 hours or so and then Eric edited and mixed the recordings (just the two of us with guitars and effects). The results are to be released by Basses Frequences. The plan has only just been formulated, but it will be a two volume vinyl release with each LP being one long and two shorter tracks with a themed sleeve design and some bonuses… more in the next few months.

The ToneFloat LP [in time this too will fade] will be going into production soon scheduled for an autumn release.
There has been a delay to the release of‘heavy with snow’, a 3” cdr release for Moscow label ABGVRD. Due to the warm summer weather this has been put back to later in the year when it is less likely to melt in the sunshine.

I had a recent experimental recording session playing live in a big room with 6 microphones close and distant. Results were pleasing so I’m planning another session to do some backing tracks for new material.

No live shows planned for now, but I’m interested in any offers for UK shows…

Lastly for now, I am selling some gear to fund a new 6-string bass. A couple of guitars are on eBay now (ending 07 Aug 2010)– both were used in recording parts of CUT. One is a candy apple red Fender Jazzmaster FSR Thin Skin model and the other is a Fender Telecaster 52 Hot Rod with Bigsby tremolo. I will probably also be selling a Peavey Milestone bass and Danelectro U2 Baritone once I get the new bass…

If you are interested, auction item numbers are: 250675008350 and 250675010850

Even more lastly, I have a few copies of CUT with bonus disc un/CUT left… you can buy through the shop page on the website, and if you already have, please tell a friend!

Thanks for listening… more news as it happens
Jon.

AND... forgot to mention 'close/r' which IS progressing.... version 2 is nearly complete and version 3 will follow soon after. nott sure exactly how i'll release it as i'm not sure i can do another full CD release, so it may be a cdr.... more news soon... ish!

Review

23rd Jun 2010, 5:20 pm

back from a week in sunny Florida (so far oil free beaches but unfortunately the outlook is not good) to a sunny England.
a nice review of CUT has been posted at the Leonard's Lair blog site:

Hard to believe that‘Cut’ is only the tenth full length album from Yellow6 such is the prolific recording career of Jon Attwood. Perhaps more tellingly, ‘Cut’ is also his 79th release in total – not bad for twelve years’ work. Now producing music on his own label, ‘Cut’ traces another journey of guitar-led minimalism.
‘Cut’ itself is a running theme of the album, with four different versions of it making an appearance. The first ‘Cut’, if you will, is the deepest since its delayed melody is totally spine-tingling although the final (‘Cut#4′) version runs it close. ‘Butterfly Girl’ features chordsdonated by another musician (Beth Georgiou) which are performed chillingly and beautifully by Attwood; rarely has repetition been this captivating, even from Attwood himself who is something of a master in this field.
After this superb start, the music drifts in to familiar ambient/post-rock territory of the darkest hue with clear nods to Labradford along the way (particularly on‘Cut #3′). Experiments in other instruments yield great results with ‘Diagnosis (Two)’ picking up the pace and urgency with real drums, whilst ‘Cut/Piano’ represents Attwood’s output in its most funereal form.Granted, there’s a lot here which will be very familiar to anyone who has owned a Yellow6 record. Once again the running time exceeds an hour, the same influences remain but Attwood is at least on top melodic form.

review and stuff...

9th Jun 2010, 6:48 pm

hi

just a brief update.... the only review (outside of Norman Records and Boomkat) of CUT has show up in Rock-a-Rolla:

"Close to 80 releases under his belt, the prolific one-man guitar outfit Yellow6's latest offering is all sparse guitar-scapes and minimalist post-rock, deelpy melancholic in outlook and execution. Whilst not quite covering new ground, it's one that fans of solo guitar explorers and instrumental post-rock will find pleasing no end" (Review by Bobby Bone)

last few copies of the CD with bonus are available at the yellow6.com shop page (any orders between 10-18 June will be shipped out on 19th)

the 3" cdr release "Heavy With Snow" on Russian label ABGVRD should be out late June - more news when it arrives.
mixing is ongoing for the next Editions6 release "close/r" which will probably be out around September, a similar timescale to the album on ToneFloat

that's it for now
thanks for reading

Boomkat

14th May 2010, 7:35 pm

this is what the nice people at Boomkat had to say about CUT... in stores NOW (if you can find a store) and copies with bonus CD still available here....

A momentous tenth album in the Yellow6 discography, Cut offers a new nine-track selection of works from Jon Attwood, who largely plays out the entire record by himself, layering delicate strands of Robin Guthrie-influenced guitar, one upon another. There is a little outsider intervention: Dave Collingwood of Gravenhurst lends a hand with drums on 'Diagnosis (Two) and Mark Beazley of Rothko (another big influence on Attwood, you'd suspect) is on hand to master the album, but the tone of the record is generally that of a real loner opus. For the title track (which, incidentally, is brilliantly reconfigured as a piano piece later on in the album's sequence), Attwood traipses through gossamer guitar arpeggios and Twin Peaks-like cinematic tremolo leads, all building up to a gorgeous and deeply resonant piece of slow-core post-rock. Another of Attwood's finest moments comes with the gently panoramic 'If You See Something, Say Something (Third Version)', whose title seems to be a cumbersome approximation of something Roy Walker used to say on Catchphrase. Here, guitars thread loosely together in the most beautiful fashion, while minuscule, crackling percussive gestures lay out backdrop of static and micro-beats. Excellent.

CUT - available to pre-order now

29th Mar 2010, 7:54 pm

Hi

spring is here, and to prove it heavy snow is forecast for England... also imminent, but much better than the weather, is the new Yellow6 album CUT (really - i love snow but it never lasts, this will!)

currently being manufactured, CUT is expected to be complete and ready to ship week beginning 12 April 2010.

Copies ordered fromwww.yellow6.comwill come with a bonus CD only available by mail order and can be pre-ordered now from the shop page.

So, here's the all important information that will make you want to rush to the store to pre-order your copy

Info / sleeve pics / tracks to preview etc. can all be found on the CUT page

the details:
CUT (editions6 E6:02) is the 10th full length album by Yellow6, and 79th release overall (if i counted correctly). Recorded between January 2009 and January 2010 and mastered by Mark Beazley (Rothko / Trace recordings), CUT contains 9 tracks and 70 minutes of minimalist guitarscapes, repetition and melody. These songs take the listener on a journey, seemingly suspending time for their duration, with intertwining guitars, piano and percussion, and featuring drums by Dave Collingwood (Gravenhurst, Yann Tiersen) on diagnosis (two).

Lighter and more spacious than some of the former Yellow6 releases, melancholy melodies are augmented with hopeful, and even upbeat, songs. The song cycle CUT is the recurrent theme of the album appearing in a number of variations throughout.

Track listing:
01 cut
02 butterfly girl
03 if you see something, say something (third version)
04 cut#3
05 gift
06 cut/piano
07 diagnosis one
08 diagnosis two
09 cut#4

all songs composed and recorded by jon attwood
drums on‘diagnosis two’ by dave collingwood
chords for butterfly girl supplied by beth georgiou
mastered by mark Beazley

un/CUT
un/CUT (editions6 E6:03) is a collection of recordings made during the same period as CUT. These recordings are a mixture of alternate mixes, original 'live' demo recordings, and additional tracks not included in the final album.

Track listing:
01 cut #2
02 20.1.10 (first version)
03 cut (demo)
04 butterfly girl (first version)
05 cut/piano (Mark Beazley rough mix)
06 diagnosis (two) (first version)
07 cut #2 (second version)
08 cut #2 (reprise)

additional instrumentation on cut/piano by mark Beazley

please email for further info / promo or distribution requests.

April 18– plane ari home gigs, Habarcq (with Microphonics)

thanks for making it this far!
